Do read the press release from Maria-Anne Privat-Savigny, Head and Curator in chief of the Fabric Museum
This exhibition springs from the scientific collaboration between the two museums. The Fabric Museum has put on loan for two years a dozen pieces of antique lace, which are now part of the permanent exhibition in Retournac. At the end of the two years these items will then be replaced by others, allowing for the discovery of the wealth of the lace collection of the Lyons museum. A part of the best items from the collection of the museum in Retournac is being shown, with, specifically, the marvellous length of venetian “Gros Point” dating back to 1680-1690. This piece of needle-lace is the best preserved in France today. In 2009, The museum in Retournac, the ARTEX foundation in Athens and the Museum of Saint-Gall in Switzerland are organizing a scientific international conference in Retournac about “Gros Point” lace. The Fabric Museum will also participate by lending its venetian “Gros Point” lace pieces to the museum in Retournac. An exhibition to be discovered as the same time as the prestigious Fabric Museum. Bobbin-lace workshops will be organized on march 7th , 14th, and 21st. We will let you know later about the practical side of these. The Lace-makers from The Friends of the Museum Society will set-up some demonstrations.
