Altar draping in thread-pulling from 16th century

This "antependium", altar decoration was worked in the technique of thread-pulling : the initial material is thinned by pulling threads out in both the warp and the weft. What is left is then worked by inserting some new thread and embroidering in button-hole stich.

This large item measuring 1m50 in lenght and 90 cm in height has a very complex theme : in the center, the worship of the wisemen, on each side the two parts of the Annunciation and below a bestiary band, still very medieval in its design.

This item is unique of its kind. No other instance of this technique and of such a size is known in a public collection.
